SIT Literacy Night 2009-2010 Plan-So-Far

Purpose/Objectives
• informative - what happens in the workshops
• provide ways for parents to support curriculum/students
• create common understanding & common language

Two Nights: Tentatively Jan 26th and 28th Same program on Tuesday and Thursday. Aim is to get larger share of parent population. Parents choose 2 sessions per night. 6:30-8:30

Structure:
General lesson plans made by 2 staff (1 for K-2 and 1 for 3-5)
K-2 Reader’s Workshop—team of 2 teachers
3-5 Reader’s Workshop—team of 2 teachers
Writer’s Workshop by grade-level—6 individual teacher presentations.

Ideas for 2009-10

For parent education nights, pair Parent Writing Exploration with Family Writing Workshop. Parents would sign up for both nights and would bring their kids only to the second night.

Further Literacy Night Ideas

Teachers who present will receive a lesson plan which can be used to base their presentation.

Need one teacher for each grade level K-6 in writing.
Need two teachers for K-2 and two 3-5 for reading.

Writing

Not sure yet which genre should be covered at each grade; possibly this should be based on recommendations of writers of lesson OR based on genres where process samples have been collected.

Revision ideas:
Include model of peer editing conference with students.
Two plusses and a wish?
Or it could be a modeled conference between adult and student
Major focus should be to help parents understand what happens to get from first draft to last draft.

What actually happens in class needs to be covered to increase parent understanding.
Mini-lesson, time to write, time to conference, summary/sharing ...?

What else could be included to make clear what happens in revision?

Description of Family Writing Workshop

Make Way for Writing: A Family Writing Workshop
The focus of this 90-minute workshop is to bring family members together to experience the joy of sharing and writing stories about growing up. Children, young people, and their parents will learn ways to call up significant memories, methods for getting writing started, and easy and practical techniques for helping each other as writers. We’ll also discuss some ideas for sharing this writing and continuing family writing at home.

The Family Writing Workshop includes the following activities:
Prewriting Activities

* Reading and conversation
* Visual representations
* Sharing with others

Writing Activities

* Choosing something to write about in any chosen genre
* Sharing some possibilities for genre exploration
* Writing for 20 minutes—separately or with another family member

Revising/Sharing Activities
Getting three families together to share their writing and to offer two plusses and a wish.
Closing
Reading a story and discussing how to continue writing at home with other topics, such as relationships and friendships.
Number of participants: up to 25 families
